Learn Python with Games: A Step-by-Step Path for Beginners

A clear route for learning Python with games, from your first line of code to writing complete programs, with what to learn at each stage.

Learning Python with games works best when the games follow a plan. Here's the path this course takes, and why each stage comes where it does. You can use it as a checklist even if you learn somewhere else.

Stage 1: What a program is

Before any Python, you need one idea: a program is a list of exact steps that a computer follows in order. Our first games use a kitchen robot and an errand runner to show this. You'll meet print, text, numbers and your first error messages.

Stage 2: Remembering and deciding

Next come variables, which are named boxes that hold values, and input, which lets your program ask questions. Then if and else let it make decisions. These three ideas already let you write small, useful programs.

Stage 3: Repeating

Loops are where programming starts to feel powerful. A for loop repeats something for each item, and a while loop keeps going until something changes. Games are perfect here, because you can watch each pass of the loop happen.

Stage 4: Organising your code

Functions let you give a job a name and reuse it. Then lists, text and dictionaries let your program handle real amounts of information. At this point, you can build projects like a to-do list, a calculator or a contact book.

Stage 5: Real-world tools

Real programs import modules, handle bad input without crashing, and save data in files. You'll learn try and except, how to read a traceback like a detective, and how to save a game with JSON.

Stage 6: Objects and thinking like a programmer

Classes let you design your own kinds of objects. Finally, you'll learn how searching and sorting work, how to write clean code, and you'll bring it all together in a final project.
